Le BMW M50 est un moteur 6 pistons en ligne.
Il a été introduit en Mars 1991 pour remplacer le BMW M20 et il a été remplacé par le BMW M52 en 1996.

L'échelle des cylindrées est de 2.0 Lt a 3.2 Lt. C'est un moteur "DOHC" 24 soupapes. Une évolution du M50 TU a partir de 1992 introduit le "VANOS" ouverture des soupapes variable.

Le M50 n'était pas lié au M20 bien qu'il bénéficiait des mêmes espacements des cylindres (91 mm),course et alésage en 2.0 L et 2.5 L. Contrairement a son successeur, le BMW M52, le M50 avait un bloc moteur en fonte grise, qui a grandement contribué a son fort potentiel de longue durée de fonctionnement et lui a conféré une capacité immunitaire élevée pour résister aux agressions des carburants alternatifs, comme l' E85 éthanol. Le reste de l'engin est composé par un mixage intéressant de matériaux: la culasse est fabriquée en alliage d'aluminium, le collecteur d'échappement est en fonte de fer, le collecteur d'entrée d'air était fabriqué en plastique avec un procédé de fabrication révolutionnaire, procédé qui a été employé pour la première fois a grande échelle pour la fabrication du moteur BMW M50

M50B20
Le 2.0 L (1991 cc) M50 B20 a été introduit avec la 520I en 1991. Il possède un alésage de 80 mm et une course de 66mm, il produit 150 hp (110 kW). Les moteurs produits a partir de 1993 recoivent une "technical update" qui inclut l'addition du VANOS (VAriable NOckenwellen Steuerung), pour l'arbre a cames d'admission.
Suite a cette évolution technologique, le moteur reçut l'appellation de M50 TUB20.

M50B24
C'est un moteur 2.4 Lt basé sur le 2.5 lT avec une réduction de cylindrée.Ce moteur est seulement livré en kits assemblée en Thailande. La puissance de sortie est de 188 CV avec un couple de 235 Nm.

M50B25
Le 2.5 L (2494 cc) M50B25 a été introduit en 1991 sur les 525i/525ix . Il avait un alésage de84 mm et une course de 75 et il produisait 192 cv (141 kW) @5900 rpm and 245 N·m @4700 rpm.

M50TUB20

The M50TUB20 is a technologically upgraded (TU) version of the BMW M50B20, introduced in 1993. The most notable change present is the inclusion of BMW's VANOS variable cam timing system on the intake cam. Power output remains identical; however, there is a slight increase in torque at lower and medium rpms.

M50TUB25
The M50TUB25 is a technologically upgraded (TU) version of the BMW M50B25, introduced in 1993. S50B30US
The S50B30US was a 3.0 L version, which powered the US-spec E36 M3. Power was 240 hp (179 kW). Unlike the RoW S50, this engine used a regular M50 intake in lieu of the individual throttle body set up and hydraulic valve lifters in lieu of solid ones. The cylinder head and the VANOS system are also different on the US S50 versus the RoW model; again having more in common with the regular M50 than the Euro S50.

S50B30
The S50B30 was a special sports-oriented 3.0 L version, which powered the RoW spec E36 M3. Power is 286 hp (210 kW). The S50B30 has a bore of 86 mm and a stroke of 85.8 mm, with a total displacement of 2990 cc. The engine has a maximum permissible speed of 7280 rpm +/-80, and a permissible constant speed of 7000 rpm. It used an Individual Throttle Body intake system with separate butterflies adjacent to each of the 6 inlet ports, an oversized MAF, and a tubular exhaust manifold. The cylinder head was unique and the VANOS system was more advanced than the one used on normal M50s.

S50B32
The S50B32 was an evolution version of the S50B30. Power of the 3.2 L version is 316 hp (236 kW). Improvements over the previous 3.0l version include Dual Vanos operating on the exhaust camshaft as well as the inlet camshaft, increased compression ratio to 11.3:1, reduced valve stem thickness (and weight), and higher redline. This engine has a bore of 86.4 mm and a stroke of 91.0 mm giving a displacement of 3201 cc. It has a maximum permissible speed of 7600 +/-50 rpm, and a permissible constant speed of 7400 rpm. Power output was rated at 316 hp (DIN) @ 7400 rpm, with a torque rating of 258 ft-lbs (DIN) @ 3250 rpm.

The final iteration of the M50 was the S54 engine which powered various BMW M vehicles between 2001 and 2008.


Moteur M52:

The BMW M52 is a Straight 6 piston engine. Displacement ranges from 2000 cc to 3200 cc. It is a DOHC 24-valve engine, originally introduced with VANOS Variable Valve Timing. It replaced the BMW M50 engine in 1994 and was replaced in 2001 with the BMW M54 engine. The world market engine used Nikasil lined aluminium cylinders instead of a cast iron sleeves used in the American market engine. The reason for this is Nikasil is eroded by the higher sulfur content fuel used in America.

In markets with low-sulfur fuel this engine was very highly regarded and the M52 was on the Ward's 10 Best Engines list for 1995 through to 1998. However, there was criticism of the M52 engine in some markets, especially the UK, which had high levels of sulfur in the petrol during the late 90's. Sulfur acts as a corrosive agent against Nikasil and led to a lot of the early engines having premature bore-liner wear. Fortunately this problem was solved in post-September 1998 cars with the introduction of steel cylinder liners, with the designation M52 TU-3. However problems are still present in these engines so affected cars of this period should be bought with caution unless the service history verifies that work was carried out to rectify the problem. The American market M52 used iron sleeves from the beginning, and so, was unaffected by this problem.

A Technical Update or M52TU version in 1999 added Double-VANOS and other modifications.

While retaining most of the internal dimensions and components of the earlier M52, the M52TU (Technical Upgrade) featured an aluminum alloy block in all markets including North America. More importantly, it featured a revised head design with Double-VANOS (variable intake AND exhaust cam timing) for additional improvements in torque delivery, economy and emissions. It also featured a variable intake manifold and an upgraded Siemens engine control system.

This engine was sold only in the USA and Canada and is closely based on the iron-block USA-spec M52 engine. It differs in having an 86.4mm bore and an 89.6mm stroke for a displacement of approximately 3.2 litres. It shares very few components with the European S50. The S52 is essentially a large displacement M52 with minor upgrades to increase performance. It uses a regular M52 head with the same stepped VANOS system (on the intake cam only) but uses more aggressive cams. The intake manifold and throttle body is from the M52B28. The exhaust manifolds are the same between M52 and S52 but the S52 uses special muffler designed by Boyesen that is less restrictive. Even the connecting rods are exactly the same 135 mm units used in the M52B28. The lubrication system on the S52 is optimized for greater flow. Engine management is handled by the same Siemens system as the M52 but is tuned to the larger displacement and slightly more performance biased.

Physically, there are very few external characteristics that distinguish the S52 from its M52 brother. The "M-Power" valve cover is the easiest to spot although it must be noted that S52 and M52 valve covers are easily interchangeable. A more subtle difference is the oil filter housing. While the M52 uses a threaded black plastic cover on its filter, the S52 uses an aluminum cover held in place by a bolt. This is the same housing as was used on the 1991-1995 M50 series engines. As such, the S52 uses M50-style filter cartridges instead of the M52 style. Power from the S52B32US is officially quoted at 240 HP but many feel that this figure is understated. Maximum permissible engine speed varies from 6500 rpm to 6800 rpm to allow a margin of safety for the hydraulic lifters and the rest of the valve-train, although the engine can safely rev to 7000 rpm.

The M54B25 is a 2.5 L (2494 cc) engine with an 84 mm (3.3 in) bore and 75 mm (3.0 in) stroke. It is all-alloy with Al-Sil block, fracture-split forged steel connecting rods, a one-piece forged crankshaft, and a reinforced plastic intake manifold. Output is 192 hp (143 kW) at 6000 rpm with 181 ft·lbf (245 Nm) of torque at 3500 rpm.

The M54B30 is a 3.0 L (2979 cc) successor of the 2.8 L BMW M52. Bore remains the same at 84 mm (3.3 in), but stroke is increased 5.6 mm (0.2 in) to 89.6 mm (3.5 in). Power is 231 hp (170 kW) at 5,900 rpm while torque is 221 ft·lbf (300 Nm) at 3,500 rpm.

It is an all-alloy engine with Al-Sil block. It uses SFI fuel injection, has 4 valves per cylinder with Double VANOS (variable valve timing) and features fracture-split forged steel connecting rods, a one-piece forged crankshaft, and reinforced plastic intake manifold.

The M54B30 was on the Ward's 10 Best Engines list through 2001-2003.
